Democratic VP candidate Tim Walz hits campaign trail wearing an excellent entry-level watch

Whatever end of the spectrum your politics lie, it’s always interesting to see what watches government officials wear. Constantly scrutinised and evaluated individuals whose roles are in service of their constituents, a luxury watch can deter the “man of the people” image some choose to lean into. Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris recently revealed that her running mate is Tim Walz. Walz, the current governor of Minnesota and a former schoolteacher, is positioned as someone who can connect with Midwestern voters – known for being a down-to-Earth speaker, and as someone who understands small-town America. With this in mind, watch lovers have naturally spotted what watch the Democratic nominee for Vice President has been wearing on the campaign trail. And it could not be a more perfect choice: the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph.

To be a relatable candidate, you cannot really tour the country wearing a solid gold Rolex Day-Date. We were thrilled to see the Greek Prime Minister wearing his Zenith Night Surfer, but you could argue such a horological flex from a leader in a country going through financial troubles is a bit out of touch. To maintain a man of the people image, it makes sense to wear a man of the people watch. Tim Walz’s Khaki Field Murph is just that. In the fictional world of Interstellar, the film the watch was created for, the watch originally belonged to Joseph Cooper before being gifted to his daughter Murphy “Murph” Cooper. The Cooper family lived on a farm in Colorado – so Midwest-adjacent. Coming back to reality, Hamilton is well known for its more affordable watch offerings that deliver higher quality at a lower cost – a real watch brand of the people so to speak. Also, while now Swiss-owned, it was once the most prolific watch brand in the United States, headquartered in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

I cannot firmly say whether Tim Walz is wearing the original 42mm watch or the newer 38mm model, but they are effectively the same – albeit the diameter difference. Both watches are under US$1,000, and for a quality Swiss automatic watch with 80 hours of power reserve, and with a strong film provenance and backstory, it irrefutably delivers a ton of bang for your buck. So, Tim Walz sporting gets a tick of approval from this author in his choice of timepiece.
