The new Casio G-Shock GM-2100D range gives the CasiOak a more robust yet colourful makeover
Jamie WeissThe Casio G-Shock 2100, better known as the “CasiOak”, is already a pretty tough watch, both aesthetically and functionally. While it’s not as overtly macho as some other G-Shock models (the Mudman GW-9500 immediately springs to mind), its octagonal case, plinth-like indices and generous proportions give it a distinctly robust air. The new G-Steel Metal Covered GM-2100D range, however, manages to simultaneously soften the CasiOak’s aesthetic somewhat by introducing some bold new coloured dials as well as hardening it thanks to a new steel cladding.
Not only are these the first models in the GM-2100 line of metal bezel watches to feature a metal bracelet, but they also boast metal sunburst dials, in five different eye-catching hues: sky blue, navy blue, lime green, orange and silver. These dials look appreciably more premium than the plastic dials on standard CasiOaks – they’re also somewhat more legible, as the indices are subtly striated and catch the light (they’re also silver on all models except the silver dial model, offering a point of contrast).
The bracelet boasts a Y-link design and a folding clasp with three points of micro-adjustment. They’re mostly brushed, with slight pops of polish at the ends to give it the appearance of a faux extra link. Similarly, the case cladding features a mix of polished and brushed surfaces, with the top of the bezel subtly radially brushed and the lug section polished.
It’s important to note that they are indeed just metal bezels/claddings (hence the “Metal Covered” moniker) as underneath that steel is a typical G-Shock resin case. This isn’t Casio cheapening out, however: the resin case helps maintain the CasiOak’s incredible shock resistance while also ensuring these 45mm watches aren’t too hefty.
Being a CasiOak, it’s packed full of features, including five daily alarms, day/date displays, a world timer, a 1/100th second chronograph timer and a Super Illuminator double LED backlight. It’s water-resistant to 200 metres and boasts a 3-year battery life.
