The Farer Monopusher GMT colourfully expands on easy utility

  • The Farer Monopusher GMT does what it says on the tin, adding GMT functionality to its Monopusher models.
  • The Cobb and Segrave colour combinations have very different feels, each giving differing amounts of playful-yet-versatile vibes.
  • They’re powered by Sellita hand-wound movements with 62-hour power reserves and 4Hz beat rates.

At this point, Farer feels far too well-established to be called a microbrand. Its watches are fleshed out with a cohesive style, embracing a playful and colourful whimsy without losing any of its dignity. Being somewhat known for its budget-friendly monopusher chronographs, throwing in another complication on top can only be a recipe for success. Available in two colour schemes, the Farer Monopusher GMT collection combines easy utility with a jet-setting attitude.

Farer Monopusher GMT Cobb 1

If you’re experiencing déjà vu, there’s a good reason for it. We’ve actually seen both of these watches before, albeit without their GMT functionality and shifted sub-dial positions. That said, it’s the sub-dials that really make these new references feel unique, no longer blending in with other twin-register or bicompax chronograph stereotypes. The Cobb version with its ice-blue sunburst and cheery yellow and orange highlights really does feel like it could have been a sleeper hit of the early ‘70s, placing the logo at 6 o’clock and the chronograph minutes at 12.

Farer Monopusher GMT Segrave 1

Meanwhile, the mostly-monochrome Segrave takes on a bit more utilitarian ruggedness, livened up by pops of blue, orange, and green from the hands. The vertical alignment of its sub-dials is a powerful enforcer of symmetry, and the matte texture on the dial plays around with textural contrast.

Both Farer Monopusher GMT watches have internal 24-hour chapter rings which correspond to the GMT hands, negating the need for mental calculations or day/night indicators. This slopes up towards the polished bezel, which accentuates the inherent dressiness within the case. At 41mm in diameter and just 44mm lug-to-lug, the stainless steel case’s slight cushion silhouette feels rugged, as does the concentric brushing on the upper lug surfaces, but the case sides have been engraved with an intricate, knurled harlequin pattern. A rose gold inlay on the crown brings it up a notch too, displaying the Farer arrow logo. The total height of the case is 14.5mm, which is significant, but understandable considering the stack of complications.

Turning the watch over, you’re greeted with a view of the manually wound chronograph movement. The Segrave version is powered by the Sellita SW536 M MP and the Cobb uses the SW530 M MP, with the only real difference between them being the location of the sub-dials. They beat at the smooth rate of 4Hz and provide 62 hours of power reserve when fully wound. All of the creature comforts such as quick-set date, quick-set GMT, and hacking seconds are there, plus the bridge that replaces the winding works of the automatic version has been decorated with an attractive chevron and arrow etching. A few specifications are in relief on the caseback, boasting of the British design with Swiss production, but more importantly the 100 metres of water resistance which makes the Farer Monopusher GMT safe to swim with. The supplied strap is calf leather with quick-release spring bars, however the 20mm lug width means you can easily find other options for experimenting.
