Citizen broadens Marvel Eco-Drive line in time for Deadpool & Wolverine
Zach Blass- Citizen extends is Marvel Citizen range with new Deadpool & Wolverine Eco-Drive watches.
- The US$350 Here Comes Deadpool watch on a strap features a black dial with Deadpool’s head at 12 o’clock, and a red Eco-Drive ring.
- The US$425 Wolverine on a bracelet goes for a blue textured dial with a scratched motif, and a yellow Eco-Drive ring.
To loosely quote Zoolander’s Jacobim Mugatu – character watches, so hot right now. Snoopy has long been a go-to, with Timex, Swatch, Omega, and Bamford all leveraging the character in their designs. More recently, the Spongebob universe found itself boldly merged into Spinnaker dive watches. Now we timely turn our attention to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Rather quietly ahead of the film’s premiere on July 26, the Marvel Citizen collection which already includes Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and more, now adds Deadpool and Wolverine into the mix.
At first glance, you might strictly think different dials and colours are at play, but two different frameworks have been used for each watch. Both have blackened steel cases that are 100 metres water-resistant, and both are Eco-Drive powered. The Here Comes Deadpool is 42.6mm in diameter, with a guardless crown at 3 o’clock, while the Wolverine has a 43mm case and a crown protected by crown guards. The Deadpool watch is also offered on a 20mm width leather strap with a pin buckle closure, and the Wolverine has a case-matching bracelet that is 22mm in width. The last key distinction, aside from colour and character, is that the Here Comes Deadpool has both day and date complications, while Wolverine’s dial just has a date.
Lume lovers will be pleased to know that each watch has its own light show of sorts, but the application of luminous material is far more functional on the Here Comes Deadpool, while the Wolverine utilises less to emphasise its claw motif. Deadpool’s eyes light up on his model, along with the indices, hands, and the “merc with a mouth” text. The Wolverine taps further into the Marvel inspiration, with the distinction of a lumed hands along with the X-Men logo at 12 o’clock.
The untreated solid casebacks also each feature signature motifs, with Deadpool assuming his pose and the comic book description of the sound of Wolverine’s claws extending. Eco-Drive calibres afford you watches that will accurately run and won’t die so long as you ensure sunlight hits the dial every now and again. Rather than the central medallion of each dial, sunlight is able to permeate these watches through the coloured rings of the minute tracks. Both fun and functional, and certainly not super expensive, these superhero watches are robust options for those who love the MCU and Deadpool and Wolverine in particular.
