The Omega Seamaster Diver 300M America’s Cup pays subtle tribute to the 37th event in Barcelona
Buffy Acacia- The 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona yet again features Omega as its Official Timekeeper.
- The new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M America’s Cup borrows from the philosophy of Omega’s recent Paris Olympics editions, keeping things tasteful.
- It’s otherwise a standard production model with a 42mm case and a METAS-certified calibre 8806.
It’s a high-adrenaline sport that parallels humanity’s progress through decades of technical advancement. There have been fierce rivalries, incredible upsets to long-term dominators, and even injury and death as risks to the participants. It travels the globe to highlight different cities and cultures, and it’s intrinsically linked with timekeeping. If you were thinking about Formula 1, I guess you didn’t read the headline. The America’s Cup is the world’s oldest international competition still active, and Omega has been its Official Timekeeper for decades. The first America’s Cup edition from Omega was released in 2000, and now we have the new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M America’s Cup with refreshing modesty.
Unlike events such as the Olympic Games or annual sporting seasons, there is no fixed time interval between each America’s Cup. Once a gang of Challengers for the Cup emerge, the Defender must compete to retain or lose the trophy. This kind of sailing feels intensely personal with incredible highs and lows, leading to staggering records like the New York Yacht Club that held the Cup for 132 years. The last challenge took place in 2021 between the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Italy’s Luna Rossa, but New Zealand’s defence succeeded and they will be defending again in Barcelona this year against a team from either Italy, Switzerland, the UK, USA, or France.
The new watch itself isn’t too different from a standard production Seamaster Diver 300M at first glance, however there are quite a few details which the discerning eye will recognise as America’s Cup references. The most subtle of these is the colour scheme, with the minute hand’s red gradient structure contrasting with the white of the ceramic wave dial and the various blue elements. The first 15 minutes of the blue ceramic bezel is definitely recognisable as a countdown for a sailing race rather than dive timing, and finally the outline of the Auld Mug trophy can be spotted as a counterbalance on the seconds hand.
Finally, the caseback is decorated with another silhouette of the Auld Mug and a B, standing for Barcelona. It’s nice to see these subtle nods which don’t change the watch too much, as it can still be something to wear daily rather than a once-in-a-blue-moon novelty.
In terms of specifications, the Seamaster Diver 300M is one of the world’s most popular luxury dive watches for good reason. Not only is it descended from those iconic Omegas seen on-screen in the ’90s James Bond films, but it’s just gorgeous. The marble-like lustre of the ceramic dial with its laser-etched wave pattern is bright and cheerful, and the blue brings waves to mind. At 42mm in diameter and 50mm lug-to-lug it’s a full size diver which doesn’t overextend the average wrist, and the 13.7mm thickness is still comfortable enough to wear in business attire, if that’s your thing. It’s powered by the calibre 8806, and although its tasteful decoration is partially blocked by the America’s Cup logos, its METAS certification ensures chronometer performance and reliability.
