One small step for Fratello, one giant leap for IFL Watches: the Fratello x IFL Watches G-Shock CasiOak Moonlander
Tom Austin- Celebrating 55 years since the 1969 moon landing, Fratello has collaborated with customiser IFL Watches to create the Moonlander CasiOak.
- IFL watches brought the concept to life by pairing a Casio 2100BB-1AER with a meticulously detailed, hand-painted dial.
- The dial features a star-laden backdrop of outer space, including a detailed moon and Apollo 11 lunar module.
We love a good collab here at Time+Tide, and as watch aficionados, we all love G-Shocks – and for some reason, anything Moon-related. Our colleagues at Fratello picked up on this and decided to collaborate with the prolific customiser IFL Watches to produce a celebration of all those things. The result is the IFL Watches x Fratello CasiOak Moonlander, released to celebrate our love of watches, G-Shocks, and the 55th anniversary of the 1969 moon landings.
Most watches that were around at the time of the Moon landing were either extremely formal affairs or highly technical tools. Of course, we all know which watch is mainly associated with our first trip to the Moon, so if we were heading there for the first time today, it stands a chance that the watch that would head on that journey would probably be a G-Shock. In fact, in the 1980s and ’90s, many a G-Shock made their way into space on the wrist of astronauts on the Space Shuttle. They don’t come more durable, more hard-wearing, nor tougher than a G-Shock, along with more functions than a Swiss Army knife, so it makes sense that Fratello would use one to celebrate one of humanity’s greatest achievements.
The base watch is the formidable “CasiOak” Casio G-Shock 2100BB-1AER, with a carbon core and a black ion-plated stainless steel outer case, offering a 200-metre water resistance rating and a battery life of around three years. The functionality of the watch is the same as every other CasiOak, including five daily alarms, a world timer, a 1/100th second chronograph timer, and, of course, being impervious to impacts and vibration. The outer bezel, much like the resin version of the watch, has the branding and functions etched into the surface, and IFL has taken the opportunity to add their custom touch, painting them in a moondust grey.
This just scratches the surface with IFL’s customisation, though, because the main attention-grabber is indeed the dial. Firstly, it’s airbrushed with a base colour of deep black and blue, and then the stars and galaxies are painted by hand, meticulously and intentionally splashing paint in the right kind of way to create that starry sky effect. Then, once satisfied with the effect, the dial artist begins the difficult task of painting the Apollo 11 lunar module, nicknamed the Eagle. The Moon itself, however, is a bit more stylised – but no less charming. The inner chapter ring insert is also finished in moondust grey to complete the look. Finishing off the watch is a comfortable resin strap, which contrasts nicely with the watch’s outer metal case.
