The Oris Hölstein Edition 2024 celebrates 120 years with a lighthearted yet blacked-out Divers Sixty-Five
Buffy Acacia- The Oris Hölstein Edition 2024 coincides with the brand’s 120th anniversary.
- It’s Oris’ first time releasing a black-on-black watch, as well as using the Calibre 400 with a diving bezel.
- The in-house Calibre 400 has a 120-hour power reserve and is regulated to -3/+5 seconds per day.
Oris is fairly unique among Swiss brands. Despite remaining an independent company with over a century of history, it still focuses on providing customers with fun and affordable watches. The Hölstein Editions aren’t just limited watches which drive sales, they actually feel like little rewards for keeping the company alive. For its 120th anniversary, the Oris Hölstein Edition 2024 takes a monochromatic view on the Divers Sixty-Five powered by the brand’s in-house calibre.
Oris has never produced a completely black-on-black watch before, and it’s interesting that it has chosen to use the Divers Sixty-Five as the guinea pig. The brand has far burlier watches which would live up to the masculine colour scheme much more readily, but that seems to be part of the fun. It’s not the kind of watch you’d expect to be drenched in streetwear style, and it’s completely transformative because of it. The 40mm case is coated in DLC, granting it fantastic scratch resistance that begs to be taken adventuring. Even the luminous pip of the rotating dive-time bezel has been blacked out, along with the numerals and markers. Legibility clearly isn’t a priority, although it is notable that this release is the first Divers Sixty-Five to pair a standard dive bezel with the Calibre 400. A 48mm lug-to-lug length also makes the Hölstein Edition 2024 accessible for a lot of wrists.
Every element of the dial is as black as charcoal, with the small exception of the printed numerals on the date window at 6 o’clock. As for the black hands and black Super-LumiNova, there’s just enough material contrast for you to make out the time in sunlight, and there is still luminous glow to help you in darker conditions. Most of its retro character has been stripped away by the total lack of colour, and the rubber tropic strap which usually evokes the ‘60s here feels almost industrial. There’s really no deeper symbology other than looking cool, and honestly it’s refreshing for a brand to admit that.
Turning the watch over reveals a solid caseback with the Oris bear, dressed up in floral board shorts and sunglasses. As a brand mascot, he’s really just a silly little guy. The beach attire reflects the laid-back attitude which Oris wants this watch to have, rather than any delusions of stealthy, tactical themes. The movement behind the caseback is the Oris Calibre 400, just another reason why Oris is so appreciated among its fans. Some brands move their movement production in-house and just repeat the same specifications as an ETA, but the Calibre 400 boasts a 120-hour power reserve even with a 4Hz beat rate. It’s also supplied with a 10-year warranty and 10-year service intervals, which is a lot longer than most other luxury Swiss brands. Additionally, Oris regulate these movements within -3/+5 seconds per day, improving upon the COSC standards of accuracy.
