Not too long ago in 2022, my first exposure to South Korean stars in the realm of Swiss watches was a photoshoot with heartthrob Hyun Bin wearing the Omega Speedmaster ’57. I’m sure we can expect to see a lot more in the coming years as the Western world continues embracing South Korea as a cultural hub, but for now this new collaboration between Bulgari and performer Lisa is a fantastic example of power and femininity.
Lisa is only 25 years old, but has had an incredible life of career dedication and success. She was born in Thailand and found a passion for performance early on, competing in multiple dancing and singing contests. By age 13 she had auditioned for the South Korean record label YG Entertainment, and the very next year she moved to South Korea to begin a five-year training process. The result was Blackpink, a genre-spanning girl group with instant popularity in 2016 in which Lisa takes on main dancing and lead rapping responsibilities. By 2020 she’d found global adoration, leading to her becoming a Bulgari ambassador and embarking on a solo career. Lisa’s debut single Lalisa broke the world record for the most-viewed video by a solo artist in 24 hours with 73.6 million views, cementing her legacy as a musical icon.
Her pairing with Bulgari isn’t necessarily an obvious pairing at first glance, but watching a Blackpink music video helps you understand a bit more. There is a balance between ferocity and polish which both groups embody, simultaneously capturing a fiery spirit like that of Italian jewellery and glamourising it beyond practicality. The dial is unlike anything I’ve seen before, with a blazing sunburst finish that morphs between hues of pastel pink, blue, and green. The Bulgari Bulgari is a wonderful choice to frame this design, with the mystical qualities accented by diamond hour markers and the dominant rose gold bezel.
The caseback is solid and depicts an engraving of an edelweiss flower, Lisa’s favourite and a token to Switzerland as her adoring step-father is Swiss. There also appears to be a QR code on the caseback, though it is not yet clear where that leads. Beneath the caseback is a quartz movement, providing reliability, stability, and accuracy for this watch which is all about its looks over mechanical tradition. Two versions of the Bulgari Bulgari x Lisa are available, one larger at 33mm and a smaller size at 23mm for wrist fitment options. The bracelet is a typical integrated style for Bulgari, with incredible finishing and fitment across the alternating brushed and polished links.
