Ineichen’s new auction to focus on independents
Fergus NashAs watch collectors get more and more access to information through either the internet or brand transparency, the glowing sheen that once accompanied the term “in-house” has started to lose its shine. There are plenty of loopholes a company can go through to earn the in-house title, and because it’s not a protected term like “chronometer” or “Swiss made”, something that’s in-house doesn’t always guarantee the utmost quality. That said, bought-in components aren’t as taboo now either, as high-end ebauches can be just as mouthwatering as a ground-up invention. Instead, the glory has been shifted onto independently owned brands and the freedom they’re afforded to create, innovate and thrive. Ineichen Auctioneers are returning on May 9 for an auction with the theme of Independents, and they’ve got some truly spectacular pieces on show as always. The auction, held at the Hotel du Président Wilson in Geneva, features names that have been garnering a lot of excitement in the last few years alongside established legends who will not disappoint. Let’s take a look at some of the most exciting lots.
Gerald Genta Tourbillon Sonnerie Repetition “Piece Unique”
Produced some time between 2004-2010, this absolute masterpiece of aesthetics and complications is a delightful display. Sparkling with an 18k gold case and bubbly decoration on the dial, the Buy It Now price of CHF400,000 demonstrates how special this watch is, from the mind of watchmaking’s most famous designer.
Alain Silberstein Tourbillon Pièce Unique
Although Alain Silberstein’s collaborations with Louis Erard have been fun to see an affordable side of the designer, it’s also great to be reminded of what he can do with a much larger budget. This unique piece from 1994 with an enamel holly branch is a cheerful and technical marvel, full of Alain’s jolly personality.
Parmigiani Fleurier Toric Westminster Minute Repeater Tourbillon GMT
Parmigiani Fleurier isn’t a new brand, but they’ve been facing a wild rise in popularity recently. This rare and exorbitant Minute Repeater Tourbillon GMT in platinum is an example of what they can do when they’re not angling for stealth-wealth, and embrace complexity.
