The 10 best watches from the 81st Golden Globe Awards

The 81st Golden Globe Awards – which honoured the best film and American television productions of 2023 – has captivated us over the last few hours, with the show feeling particularly glamorous and high-stakes. It was a big year for film and TV, with heavy hitters like Barbie, Oppenheimer, Succession, Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, Beef and Saltburn all vying for awards on the night.

I’ve been glued to my screen for the last few hours, watching stars’ wrists like a hawk, to see what sort of cool timepieces the rich and the famous wore to the show – and I’m happy to say that these Golden Globes were particularly golden as far as watch spotting has been concerned. Here’s the ten best watches worn by Golden Globe attendees.

Barry Keoghan – Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 34mm

First up, we have Irish actor Barry Keoghan, who received a Best Actor nomination for his role as Oliver Quick in the black comedy/psychological thriller Saltburn. Barry’s a bit of a watch guy actually, having recently been spotted wearing pieces from brands as diverse as Audemars Piguet, Cartier IWC, Vacheron Constantin and TAG Heuer. However, he chose to wear a rather opulent Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 34mm Sedna Gold on Sedna Gold (ref. 220.55.34.20.99.001), which features a diamond-paved dial and bezel plus marquise-cut red rubies as indices – complementing his very red outfit. Simu Liu – Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Retrograde Day-Date

Shang-Chi star Simu Liu, who played “Rival Ken” in Barbie (which won 2 awards from 9 nominations including the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award), is another watch guy, so you can always expect a solid wrist game from him. He wore a Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Retrograde Day-Date (ref. 4000U/000R-B516) to the 81st Golden Globes: retrograde displays are one of Vacheron Constantin’s signature complications, and this Patrimony is a particularly elegant example, combining a pink gold case with a sunburst satin finish blue-coloured dial. Ryan Gosling – TAG Heuer Carrera Date

As for the main Ken, Ryan Gosling, he went for a slightly less ostentatious watch: a stainless steel TAG Heuer Carrera Date (ref. WBN2111.FC6505). When you’re as much of a sex symbol as Ryan Gosling, a stainless steel three-hander is Kenough. Sadly, he wasn’t asked to perform I’m Just Ken at the Golden Globes… Price: A$4,450.

Robert Downey Jr – Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Chronograph

Noted Urwerk aficionado Robert Downey Jr – who won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his role as antagonist Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer – instead wore a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Chronograph in rose gold (ref. Q389257J) as he received his award. One of the stand-out watch releases of 2023, the Reverso Chronograph is the ultimate style chameleon: dressy and understated for when you’re on the red carpet, but sporty and technical when you’re feeling racy. Timothée Chalamet – Cartier Crash

Timothée Chalamet (a.k.a. Willy Wonka) loves Cartier and is known for favouring a stainless steel Panthère – but for the Golden Globes this year he decided to bling out with a white gold, gem-set Cartier Crash (ref. CRHPI00654). A limited edition of only 67 pieces, it features a bezel, bracelet and crown set with a collective 470 diamonds, and is powered by the manual winding calibre 8970 MC. Price: A$294,000.

Will Ferrell – Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition “No Time to Die”

Funnyman and Barbie star Will Ferrell stole the show, performing a refreshingly dumb (and funny) bit as he and Kristen Wiig presented the award for Best Actor – Musical/Comedy. He also had one of the best wrist shots of the night, showing off his No Time to Die Omega Seamaster (ref. 210.90.42.20.01.001) to the photo gallery. The Bond-style white tux was the cherry on top. Price: A$16,650.

Selena Gomez – Bulgari Serpenti

Speaking of cherries, Barry Keoghan wasn’t the only star who wowed with a bright red outfit and a blingy watch. Selena Gomez, who was nominated for Best Performance in a Television Series – Musical/Comedy for her starring role as Mabel in Only Murders in the Building, wore a stunning red split-leg dress and an even more stunning Bulgari Serpenti (ref. 101786). This high jewellery piece features a 26mm watch head with a white mother-of-pearl dial and diamond-set indices set on a double spiral 18ct white gold bracelet set with brilliant cut diamonds. Price: A$175,000.

Kieran Culkin – TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Glassbox

HBO’s dark comedy-drama series Succession was one of the big winners of the night, with the cast and crew picking up a total 4 awards from a whopping 9 nominations (tied with Barbie for total noms, btw), one of which being Kieran Culkin’s gong for Best Performance in a Television Series – Drama for playing Roman Roy. Succession is also a show filled with amazing watches so I was expecting at least one of the Succession cast to be wearing something cool, and Kieran delivered, wearing the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Glassbox in black (ref. CBS2210.FC6534). Price: A$9,350.

John Krasinski – IWC Portugieser

John Krasinski – accompanying his wife Emily Blunt who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer in, you guessed it, Oppenheimer – chose a deliciously salmon-dialled IWC Portugieser Automatic 40 (ref.IW358313). Like Barry Keoghan and Selena Gomez, he was also rocking a bright red outfit, so this IWC was a nice choice. Price: A$11,100.

Bradley Cooper – Louis Vuitton Tambour

Finally, we have Bradley Cooper, who might have been snubbed twice by Oppenheimer for his work as both star and director of Maestro, but at least beat Cillian Murphy in the watch game stakes with his new Louis Vuitton Tambour in stainless steel with a blue dial (ref. W1ST20). Going for stainless steel was an interesting choice – it’s called the “Golden Globes” for a reason… Price: A$31,000.
