It’s crazy to consider that it was only 30 years ago that diamonds first appeared on a steel watch, but that was the innovation of Caroline Scheufele for Chopard in 1993. The original Chopard Happy Sport embraced the concept of Joie de Vivre in every manner that it could, providing sparkly glamour without the pressure of a precious metal. Announced at the same time as the Happy Hearts jewellery range, the latest addition to the collection is the Chopard Happy Sport 25mm, taking another step towards dainty femininity with its dancing diamonds.
The 25mm case size leans into the fact that this watch is more of an accessory than a timepiece, further demonstrated by the lack of minute markers on the dial. That said, it’s undoubtedly a gorgeous accessory. The polished surfaces of the steel case are glamorous, and there are four different bezel options for you to choose from. You can either have a plain bezel in steel or 18k rose gold, or either of those two metals also set with a ring of diamonds.
Above the silver sunburst dial, applied hour markers are displayed with Roman numerals at the quarters for a traditionally pretty look. The sword hands lend a sharp elegance as well, but the main attraction for any Chopard Happy Sport are the dancing diamonds. Five set diamonds are set loose between the dial and the crystal, and there is a fascinating technical solution behind the way they’re able to move. As diamond is the hardest material on Earth, it will inevitably scratch anything else it slides across, including sapphire. To prevent the dial and crystal from being scratched, the diamonds are surrounded by a thin gold frame that also allows them a greater freedom of movement with less friction.
All variants of the Chopard Happy Sport 25mm come with a navy blue leather strap, although the plain bezel references are paired with a double-tour strap that makes for a bolder wrist presence. These watches are also powered by a Swiss quartz movement for efficiency, accuracy, and affordability.
