Homemade Tortilla Chips

Homemade Tortilla Chips are way tastier than store bought. They have a crispy bite to them that you just can’t get in a bag.

The best flavor comes from frying your chips, but I don’t deep fry anything in my house. Grease splatters everywhere and makes a mess, even when you think it isn’t. Now that I have an air fryer, my world has been opened to healthier fried foods without the mess.

There’s no need to deep fry tortilla chips when you can make crispy, delicious chips in your air fryer. It takes just minutes to make and only three ingredients!

How to Make Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

If you have tortillas in your fridge, you’re on your way to having chips. Grab those, some olive oil cooking spray (or any cooking spray), and some coarse salt.

I tested both corn tortillas and flour tortillas and while both come out great, the corn tortillas turn out slightly crispier so I prefer them.

  1. Slice the tortillas into 6-8 pieces depending on the size tortilla you have. I use a pizza cutter to make it really easy.sliced tortillas to make air fryer tortilla chips
  2. Spray the tortillas lightly with cooking spray, then sprinkle with salt.
  3. Lay the tortillas into the air fryer basket, without letting them overlap, and cook for 3 minutes at 350 degrees. Flip them over, give them another light spray, add more salt (if you think they need it – the amount of salt is a personal preference), and cook for another 2-3 minutes or until browned and crisp.
  4. Air fryers do vary from brand to brand. Some require pre-heating, mine does not. Keep an eye on yours – it may take more or less time to crisp up the chips.
  5. That’s it! Remove from the basket and they will continue to crisp as they cool. Once they have cooled, you’re ready to start dipping.

Baked Tortilla Chips

Don’t have an Ari Fryer? You can bake your homemade tortilla chips!

If you don’t yet have an air fryer, you can also bake the chips. Follow the same steps – slice, spray, salt – then line in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 7 minutes at 350, flip, lightly spray with cooking spray, then bake another 2-3 minutes or until crisp and browned.

Serving Suggestions

These chips make the perfect snack or party appetizer. Serve them with Spicy Nacho Cheese sauce, Homemade Salsa, Pineapple Salsa or Guacamole.

You can also pile them high with toppings and turn them into Sheet Pan Nachos, Buffalo Chicken Nachos, or Loaded Chicken Nachos.

If you want to add another layer of flavor, squeeze some lime juice over the chips. Want to spice them up? Sprinkle on some cajun seasoning, chili powder or cayenne pepper. Want to sweeten them up? Sprinkle with cinnamon & sugar.

How to Store Them

Air fryer tortilla chips will stay fresh for up to two weeks if you store them in an airtight container or a zip top bag at room temperature. Do not freeze or refrigerate.

  1. These are OUTSTANDING!! I will no longer buy store tortilla chips. Ever.
Since it was my first time, I overcooked them a bit but they were still excellent. Thank you!!!

  2. I don’t know about your air fryer but every one I’ve ever used blows these tortilla pieces all over the place. There’s no way to keep them from overlapping. Fail.

    1. How many air fryers have you tried? I’m truly curious what brands you’ve used because my Cosari does a great job.

    2. Most air fryer accessory kits come with a rack that you can put over light weight food items from flying around the air fryer. I use mine all the time.

    3. I have a ninja air fryer /glorified toaster oven and it does not blow anything anywhere.

It’s not the recipes fault. It’s the manufacturer of the equipment.

  3. These were so fabulous! I used small low carb tortillas. I got about 20 small chips for 90 calories!! So great for a low carb diet!

  4. Thanks for sharing this recipe! I made nachos using the chips from this recipe (corn tortillas) and they turned out great! So happy that I can enjoy nachos while still watching calories and fat. This recipe is definitely quick and easy.

  5. That was easy to follow and to the point. Thank you so much for giving two options in cooking and offering choices on I gradients and your chefs opinion on which works better and how to store, and even nutritional information. So beautifully written. Thank you.

  6. I wanted to know if I should use a piece of parchment paper in my Gourmia air fryer, while making tortilla chips. I’m not sure if I need to preheat this particular air fryer either. Thanks for the help!!!

  7. I use Aquafaba a instead of oil, the Trader Joe’s chili lime seasoning. Fat free and low salt. I know someone will ask… Aquafaba is the liquid that canned garbanzo beans are packed in.

  8. Is it okay to brush chips with oil rather than using cooking spray to avoid residue build up in the air fryer? Thanks!

  9. Thanks for the ideas! I used the remainder of a packet of fresh corn tortillas from a local tortilleria. After 6 minutes in the air fryer some were a little chewy on the inside, but overall nice and crispy and tasted great!

    1. You’re right. In the air fryer, oil is not needed. It just adds fat and calories with no nutrition.
I found the perfect time for my air fryer, but will not give it here because every air fryer is different.
One tip that does work is leave in the air fryer until the fryer is cool because it will continue to crisp in the hot air fryer after the cooking cycle ends.
You will ruin a few tortillas until you find the perfect time, but once you find it, this is a GREAT way to make fat free tortillas in the air fryer.
Now, I will say that a temperature of 355 works for me. If you air fryer has a temperature adjustment, this is something, along with time, you will need to adjust on a trial and error basis.

  10. I love them. I did not have Coarse salt instead I used Iodized salt and they were Delicious. I also used my Aitfryer.

  11. Turned out great! The second time I used sea salt. I can not wait to try other seasoning. I have an air fryer oven, so I cut them into stripes.

  12. Definitely agree that the corn tortilla worked better for this recipe. I had a lot of luck making tortilla bowls this way for taco salads and crispy tortilla shells as well!

      1. I was wondering the same for carbs. What is one serving? You show 36 chips is how many there are. So is one serving = 1 chip or 6 (one round cut into 6 pieces?
Also do you use a specific brand of corn tortillas?

Thanks as I’m diabetic and take insulin based on number of carbs consumed.
        Excited to try!
        Sarah

        1. In this case, a serving is 1 chip for calculating purposes, and the nutrition information is approximate as I am not a nutritionist.
