Omega’s new Constellation collection includes 20 references of time-telling jewellery

  • Omega has released 20 new references for the Constellation catalogue in 25mm, 28mm, and 29mm sizes.
  • The 25mm and 28mm versions have quartz movements, while the 29mm models are powered by a METAS-certified Calibre 8700.
  • All of the watches have bezels and dials set with diamonds, whether they’re made of steel, Sedna/Moonshine Gold, or a two-tone combination.

As the ravages of minimalism gradually fade away, we’ve been seeing a return to excess in luxury watchmaking. Detailed dials, intricate gem settings, and a wide assortment of colours are exactly what people have been craving to best exemplify their personalities on-wrist. For those who love the retro style and the historical importance of the Omega Constellation collection, a total of 20 new references will make that easier than ever across various dial colours and case sizes.

The first Omega Constellation watch came about in 1952, named in honour of chronometer testing at astronomical observatories. The collection expanded gradually, before being drastically overhauled in 1982 by designer Carol Didisheim. The style of those ‘80s Constellations is still what drives the contemporary lineup, along with the respect for accuracy and chronometry which it has always prioritised. The case lies somewhere between tonneau and cushion shapes, with an upturned facet before the integrated bracelet that feels highly sculptural and modernist. Both the cases and the bracelets have been polished to a liquid-like shine, heightening the sense of sophistication and more easily distinguishing the contrasting lustres of the two-tone models.

Across the 20 references, five of them are housed in 25mm cases, another five in 28mm cases, and the final ten in 29mm. The variety of sizing accommodates all kinds of different wrists, but also explores some different technical options. The largest size can fit an automatic movement, so Omega has loaded the 29mm models with the calibre 8700 which is a METAS-certified Master Chronometer. That ensures accuracy within -0/+7 seconds per day, as well as magnetic resistance up to 15,000 Gauss. Of course, quartz movements are generally more accurate than any mechanical chronometer, so trials aren’t conducted very often. The 25mm and 28mm references use quartz movements with the Constellation observatory engraved on the caseback, and the only other difference is their lack of date display.

There are options in stainless steel, Moonshine Gold, Sedna Gold, and a mix of both, but the real stars of the show are the dials. Spiralling out of the Constellation star above 6 o’clock, a roughly gouged sunburst texture creates an explosion of colour. From aubergine to sage green, including various metallic golds and silvers, different tones are explored in the steep valleys and peaks of the dial’s depth. Every reference’s bezel and dial have been set with substantial diamonds too, increasing the sparkling dynamics as your watch moves around. Omega’s tagline for this new batch of releases has been ‘Time Telling Jewellery,’ and they certainly live up to that.
