Piaget renames the Black Tie as the Andy Warhol, marking the occasion with a luxe Clou de Paris model
Jamie Weiss- Piaget officially recognises one of its most famous collectors, renaming the Black Tie as the Andy Warhol to reflect its popular nickname.
- The first officially-titled Piaget Andy Warhol features a blue meteorite dial and a white gold case with Clou de Paris.
- At the same time, Piaget has announced an enhanced ‘Made to Order’ personalisation service for the Andy Warhol watch.
While perhaps not as immediately front of mind in watch culture as some other celebrity collectors – like Paul Newman or Sylvester Stallone – Andy Warhol has a rightful place in the celebrity watch enthusiast pantheon. The legendary pop artist’s eclectic, lavish watch collection included Cartiers, Rolexes and Patek Philippes, but one watchmaker captivated Warhol more than any other: Piaget. Former CEO Yves Piaget was a close friend of Warhol’s, and the artist owned dozens of pieces from the brand. Of course, the model he’s most associated with is the Black Tie, which has long been nicknamed the ‘Andy Warhol’ by enthusiasts. Piaget is now officially recognising that nickname, renaming the Black Tie to the Andy Warhol in an official new collaboration under license with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
To mark this name change, Piaget has unveiled a luxe new take on the iconic cocktail watch called the Andy Warhol Clou de Paris. As the name implies, its oversized 45mm white gold case swaps out the gadroons of the original model for Clou de Paris (also called ‘hobnail’) decoration. For those who aren’t familiar with the technique, Clou de Paris is a guilloché pattern consisting of small, pyramid-like squares. Executing Clou de Paris on a curved case like the Piaget Andy Warhol’s is particularly challenging.
Adding to the glamour, the Andy Warhol Clou de Paris additionally features a blue meteorite dial, with a subtle but exciting tinted Widmanstätten pattern. Piaget, of course, has long been known for its sumptuous stone dials, so using meteorite here is entirely thematic. The original Black Tie from 1972 utilised a Beta 21 (Switzerland’s first quartz watch movement), but this 2024 model is powered by the in-house Calibre 501P, an ultra-thin automatic movement with a 42-hour power reserve.
Alongside this ‘flagship’ Andy Warhol Clou de Paris, Piaget has also announced a Made to Order program for the Andy Warhol. Customers can choose between white or rose gold cases; 11 different stone dials including meteorite, malachite, turquoise and falcon eye; 5 different colours for its leather strap and either dauphine-style hands or batons like the OG. We’re waiting for more details on how accessible this Made to Order program will be, but suffice to say, the Andy Warhol/Black Tie will remain a rather exclusive watch.
