NEWS: Omega release Speedmaster Mark II ‘Rio 2016’ Olympic edition
Felix ScholzThe dust has barely settled on the World Cup’s vuvuzelas and caxirolas, and already Brazil is gearing up for the their next big sporting commitment: the Rio 2016 Olympics.
And long-time Olympic timekeepers Omega are leading the special edition charge announcing a handsome limited edition (of 2,016 pieces – obviously) Mark II Speedmaster.
Just quietly we think this edition might be one of the most handsome Olympic editions of recent years. But don’t take our word for it – check out the competition below and decide for yourself.
Speedmaster II ‘Rio 2016’
The already sexy just (re)released Speedmaster Mark II gets a podium-worthy facelift. The chronograph subdials are highlighted with gold, silver and bronze – a look we saw on their World Cup Speedmaster. This restrained detailing calmly states “I’m an Olympic edition watch” without screaming “I’m going to go out of fashion in a few years time!” We think this watch is further evidence that tasteful bi-metal watches are slowly coming back, and Omega are currently ahead of the mainstream curve. The radially brushed cushion case of the Mark II has, by the way, never looked better.
We think the Rio 2016 hits all the right notes in terms of flexibility and sexiness. The Australian retail price is $7,600.
Seamaster Planet Ocean 37.5mm ‘Sochi 2014’
This ‘Winter Wonder’ watch was released for the Sochi winter Olympics and elevates its icy white palate with red and blue highlights – evoking the flag of the Russian Federation.
Seamaster Aqua Terra Co-axial Chronograph ‘London 2012’
The bigger than Ben-Hur London Olympics saw Omega release a range of limited editions – including this blue dialed Aqua Terra. It’s a classy look and the blue really goes with the textured dial of the Aqua Terra.
Seamaster “Melbourne 1956” (Proving Aussie’s do it best)
From a completely unbiased (cough) perspective we think this 1956 Melbourne Olympic edition Gold Seamaster is perhaps the most elegant and tasteful piece of sporting memorabilia ever made. Gold medal to us!
