  • The Hamilton Khaki Field Quartz makes one of Hamilton’s most accessible watches an even easier choice.
  • Available in 38mm or 33mm case sizes, it’s versatile no matter your wrist size.
  • The black and white dials use aged lume for a vintage look, while the blue dial is cleaner for a more contemporary look.

Hamilton is consistently considered one of the best-value Swiss watch brands, even if it did start out in America. Aside from its legendary love affair with the silver screen, Hamilton watches have proven particularly popular as budget-friendly watches that can survive a pretty active lifestyle. The Khaki Field catalogue is purpose-built for that exact reason, and it’s just become even more affordable and durable thanks to a quartz movement.

All romance swept aside, quartz watches are objectively better than mechanical ones. If you can’t be bothered to wind them, re-set the time, or take them for regular servicing, then a strapping on a quartz watch will be far more satisfying. The Hamilton Khaki Field is well-suited to a quartz movement because it has an adventurous edge and prioritises utility, accurate to its roots. While all field watches have their origins in military supply, the Khaki Field Quartz is specifically inspired by the Hamilton G.S. watches which were issued to British government staff in the 1960s. It’s by no means a one-to-one reissue, but the eye-catching triangle at 12 o’clock and the legible Arabic numerals carry a similar energy.

Altogether there are eight references within the new Khaki Quartz collection, split across two case sizes and three dial colours. The larger size is still quite versatile at 38mm in diameter and only 8.3mm thick, making it ideal for average wrists with a desire for solid presence. The smaller version is 33mm wide and just 7.5mm tall, which will suit slender wrists or those who prefer sizing typical of 1940s field watches. The dial variations are white or black with cream-tone luminous paint, or if you prefer a cleaner and more contemporary look, navy blue with white lume. With only 50 metres of water resistance, you probably don’t want to take them diving, but they’ll certainly live through consistent splashes, rain storms, and the occasional submersion.

There isn’t much to be said about the quartz movements other than they’re Swiss-made by ETA and tick with a 1Hz beat as normal. The Khaki Field Quartz watches come on textile NATO straps in either khaki green, blue, or black colours: if you want to experiment with other kinds of straps, you should have a pretty easy time finding aftermarket options, as the 38mm and 33mm cases have lug widths of 20mm and 18mm respectively. The crystal is made of sapphire for scratch resistance, and the casebacks are solid.
