Glashütte Original flips the moonphase on its head with the PanoLunarInverse

  • With a large, off-centre aventurine dial disc, Glashütte Original cases the new PanoLunarInverse in stunning platinum.
  • The movement construction was oriented so the most engaging components, such as the balance wheel, are visible from the front.
  • The 200-piece limited edition is priced at A$67,150.

The design language of Glashütte Original is firmly cemented in its Teutonic roots, with the likes of the PanoMatic heavily inspired by the revolutionary Lange 1. To further differentiate itself, Glashütte Original decided to put the most interesting part of a watch (to some), namely the movement, front-and-centre: by inverting the calibre and having its beating heart on full display, the PanoInverse was born. Combining another “complication” that often features in the PanoMatic collection, the new Glashütte Original PanoLunarInverse additionally incorporates a moonphase display – in stunning fashion.

The three-quarter plate that’s now fully exposed dial-side is finished in a stunning guilloché that reminds me of the dashboard of a vintage gentleman’s racer, contrasting against the aventurine disc that forms the rather large moonphase display. Dotted with the blues and purples of the screws and jewels, the highlight for me is the black-polished elements of the balance assembly.

glashutte original panolunarinverse case profile

Just like the majority of the PanoMatic collection, the PanoLunarInverse is a sizeable watch, measuring 42mm in diameter and 12.46mm thick. However, with a 48.9mm lug width, it’ll still be suitable for the average wrist, although it maintains significant heft thanks to its platinum construction.

Just because the movement is inverted, however, doesn’t mean the German watch brand left the caseback untouched, or even worse, covered up. Instead, the winding rotor is left fully open and emblazoned with a small Moon. The rest of this is a full plate of guilloché and not much else. Not that I’m complaining. Spec-wise, the Calibre 91-04 beats at 4Hz for up to 45 hours, and in addition to the moonphase also features GO’s Panorama Date complication.
