Swatch’s latest MoonSwatch keeps the moonphase, ditches Snoopy & goes for a blue panda look

Swatch’s latest MoonSwatch keeps the moonphase, ditches Snoopy & goes for a blue panda look

We’d joke that releases like this are once in a blue moon, but it seems the opposite is true: Swatch just can’t stop releasing new MoonSwatches. This latest take on the hyped watch is more significant than most, however, as not only does it introduce a significantly new aesthetic but it might also prove to be the hardest MoonSwatch to acquire at retail yet.

Swatch x Omega Bioceramic MoonSwatch Mission to the Super Blue Moonphase

Officially called the Swatch x Omega Bioceramic MoonSwatch Mission to the Super Blue Moonphase, Swatch explains that it’s “a double homage to summer”, that “not only celebrates the festive and joyful atmosphere of sunny days back at the beach, but also highlights the full blue moon on August 19, the first super moon of the year.” In case you were wondering, a super moon is a full moon or a new moon that nearly coincides with perigee (i.e. the closest that the Moon comes to the Earth in its orbit) resulting in a moon that looks slightly larger than usual when viewed from Earth.

This model builds upon the Mission to the Moonphase (better known as the “Snoopy MoonSwatch”) that was released earlier this year, imagining the complication in a blue and silver panda colour scheme that’s quite evocative of the Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary that came out in 2020. This is the third moonphase-equipped MoonSwatch to join the collection following the “Black Snoopy” and the OG Snoopy MoonSwatch.

However, despite this similarity, the Super Blue Moonphase has actually done away with the little Snoopy graphics on the moonphase indicator. Instead, we get a more photorealistic blue-tinged moon. Gone too is the Snoopy footprint from the battery cover on the caseback.

Another notable change the Super Blue Moonphase brings to the table is that it features a pulsometer bezel rather than a tachymeter bezel. While the legendary Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch boasts a tachymeter, pulsometers have periodically appeared on some Speedmaster models over the years, such as on the Speedmaster CK 2998.

The MoonSwatch Mission to the Super Blue Moonphase will be available from August 1st to August 19th (the date of the full moon), only at selected Swatch stores and pop-up stores, and only from 5 pm onward – the so-called “blue hours”. While certainly thematic, I’d wager part of the reason Swatch is choosing to drop these watches at 5 pm is to try and stop people camping out for them… Although the cynic in me thinks this will just mean people will start camping even earlier.
